Standing refers to the Alignment of the Body and how the weight sits downward. Standing is a process where you get some things right so that other things can happen. In some positions the body is unable to relax, so learning how to be straight and sit on the legs is a beginning.
Turning refers to the relationship between the hips and the waist. The hips stay in line with the feet as one learns to keep the kea open. The waist can turn more than the hips. This coordination in the unitary movement is what the study of turning is about. One may have to develop some flexibility in the waist in order to turn it and still be relaxed.
Peng is the body state of tension. The idea state is said to be stretched and relaxed. Not tense or limp. So learning this balance will take time. There is a body state that is best for circulation in internal practice and there is a body state that is best for martial art. Both have the characteristic of stretched and relaxed. Obviously the body state in combat would be a little heavier than in practice for optimum circulation.
Shifting weight or the weight's center is very important in the basics. How to shift weight staying in the legs and learning how to sink (relax) in order to shift weight. Staying in the legs is one of the main internal skills to achieve. As one shifts the weight one must also learn to keep the torso very erect and upright.
Stepping in the internal arts is all about building leg strength so the steps can be changeable. In slow motion you step lighter and the faster you go the weights center moves toward the center so the step is a little heavier. In general you don't want to step over 50% of your weight on the foot coming down. Stepping light takes good leg strength.
Breathing is developed in order to get more air to come in so more air can go out. The middle of the body including the belly and dan dian learns to expand with both inhale and exhale as both natural and reverse breathing are used in training. One will learn to breath deep, soft and continuous in order to contribute to the degree of relaxation that needs to be present.
