Christopher G Casey 1948 - 1987
Mr. Casey was my Chinese Boxing teacher. l;Mr. Casey was in my opinion one of the giants in the mental side of the martial arts. He had clarity in his analysis and seemed to have wisdom in organizing the priorities and truths of realistic fighting. His creativity in developing apparatus and drills for training were phenomenal.
He was an eccentric and was difficult to understand at first glance. He was from the school of thought that one had to earn his stripes and not be given valuable information without proving the strong desire to work through hardship. Also those who had limited contact with him often have a inadequate view of his martial art. It is as simple as the example about 4 people seeing a car wreck from 4 different angles. You can't put the story together without studying the 4 perspectives. Many would have a few classes with this teacher and then form an opinion of his martial art. It took a long time in my opinion to put together his theory of realistic martial art. I am grateful for the hours he would talk to me on the phone to clarify many things in his teaching.
He believed in showing techniques very strong in order to get the student to believe in the technique. Fortunately he did not injure many people with this method but he primarily worked with long time martial artist.
His life was too short but his contribution was enormous and for those who believe in the Chinese Boxing theory that he taught, we are left with an enormous gift and the responsibility to do something with it.
